Increasing Brain Plasticity & Improving Memory

What is BDNF & Why Should You Care?

BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) is a protein that supports learning, memory, mood, and resilience. It helps the brain adapt to stress, recover from trauma, and regulate systemic inflammation. In other words, BDNF is essential for a healthy, responsive, and adaptable brain.

    Why BDNF Matters

When BDNF levels are optimal, the brain becomes more plastic, meaning it can grow, adapt, and recover more easily. This translates to:

    • Better memory and cognitive performance

    • Stronger emotional regulation

    • Lower risk of depression, anxiety, and ADHD

    • Hormonal balance

Everyone Has BDNF, But Not Everyone Has Enough

It’s important to understand that everyone produces BDNF, but many people have suboptimal levels due to lifestyle, inflammation, or even genetics.

    BDNF is Boosted By:

    • Aerobic exercise

    • Intermittent fasting or timed eating schedules (ifor very specific patient populations)

    • Omega-3s (EPA + DHA)

    • Curcumin

    • Restorative sleep

    • Sunlight and time outdoors

    • Polyphenol rich foods (e.g. blueberries, green tea)

    BDNF is Suppressed By:

    • Poor or fragmented sleep

    • Chronic stress and cortisol dysregulation

    • Processed foods

    • Sedentary lifestyle

    • Toxin exposure

    • Systemic inflammation

    • Nutrient deficiencies

Genetics and BDNF: The Val66Met Polymorphism

Some individuals carry a common genetic variation in the BDNF gene known as Val66Met (rs6265). This variant can reduce the release and activity of BDNF in the brain, making it harder for those individuals to recover from stress, build new neural connections, or respond to typical interventions like exercise or sleep improvement.

This means you may need a more targeted to activate your brain’s natural repair systems.

    A Functional Medicine Perspective

If you're experiencing memory loss, poor focus, or emotional instability, it’s not just about boosting BDNF, it’s about identifying what’s impairing your brain’s ability to heal.

As a Functional Medicine Nurse Practitioner, I focus on:

    • Sleep quality

    • Movement and exercise

    • Anti-inflammatory foods

    • Nervous system regulation

    • Nutrition Optimization

    • Reducing Environmental toxins

    • Testing for some genetic factors (like BDNF Val66Met)

Each of these may affect your brain’s ability to produce and use BDNF effectively.

    Final Thoughts

You don’t need a diagnosis to benefit from BDNF optimization, but if you are noticing cognitive or emotional shifts, a thorough work-up is imperative with a skilled Medical Provider.
