Should you take Glutathione?

As a Functional Medicine Nurse Practitioner, 1 occasionally hear both medical and non medical personnel say, "You should take glutathione."
While it is true that we all need glutathione, did you know your body actually makes its own?
And the answer is not always that you need to take more glutathione, or even take glutathione at all.
A 2023 review published in Antioxidants asked an important question...
"How do we effectively increase intracellular glutathione?"
One of the main conclusions was that simply supplementing with glutathione often does not lead to meaningful increases inside the cell.
Why?
Because of limited absorption, inefficient transport into cells, and rapid metabolism. Many glutathione strategies look great on paper or in lab studies, but have modest real world effects in the body.
in the body.
The authors reviewed multiple approaches to increasing cellular glutathione, including glutathione derivatives, cysteine donors such as N acetylcysteine, activation of NRF2 signaling, and dietary interventions.
Across all of these strategies, effectiveness depended heavily on metabolic context.
That includes oxidative burden, enzymatic capacity, mitochondrial function, and the availability of precursor nutrients and cofactors.
One key clinical takeaway is that glutathione depletion is often a downstream signal of broader metabolic strain, not an isolated deficiency.
Supporting glutathione means addressing synthesis, recycling, and overall redox balance, not just increasing intake.
This is why evaluating underlying physiology matters when addressing oxidative stress related symptoms, rather than relying on a single supplement in isolation.
Metabolomix + is my favorite specialty test to run on patients to assess many of these underlying contributors as well as gain an understanding not just on the individual's underlying micronutrient status, but how the cells are using these micronutrients. This goes well beyond anything regular bloodwork at a PCP could detect.
